When sweet iron reacts with moisture, warmth and air in a process called oxidation surface rust is created. The horses likes the sweet taste of the rust. They typically will salivate more which will encourages better acceptance of the bit. The blue colour of the bit gradually changes to gray/brown with rust spots visible on the mouthpiece. Clean the bit with a damp cloth as the rust sports turn orange.
